New drugs come onto the scene all the time, and for parents, it is a smart idea to stay abreast of what is happening since younger people often become victims of drug abuse. One of the latest drugs that has caught the eye of law enforcement and those who work to keep illegal drugs under control is etizolam.

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, etizolam is a drug with similar effects to Xanax and Valium. It is an emerging drug that is highly addictive, which means there is a good potential for abuse, which is why the drug is causing concern. The groups that are most at risk are young adults, older adults and youths.

Effects

Etizolam is an intoxicant that has incredibly strong effects. It depresses the central nervous system, creating a sedative effect. It does have clinical uses for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety. It can also cause hypnotic effects. Typical reactions to the drug include muscle weakness, headaches, depression, confusion, drowsiness, incoordination and fainting. It can also lead to changes in libido, visual disturbances, slurred speech and tremors.

Details

Etizolam usually comes in powder or tablet form, but may also be in distribution on blotter paper. People in the U.S. typically buy it from online retailers in other countries.

Its legality in the U.S. is muddled. The federal government does not list it as approved for any use besides research. However, it is not on the controlled substance list. The Recovery Centers of America state that while the federal government does not have a ban on the drug, it is illegal in Florida.
