Federal prosecutor says federal drug trafficking linked to deaths

Drug-related crimes appear to be problematic in Florida and other regions. One incident in another state has resulted in several men facing federal drug trafficking charges. They were recently indicted in a federal court.

The five men charged range in ages from 22 to 47. Authorities have accused them of selling heroin laced with fentanyl. At least five drug overdoses were reported, three of which proved fatal. The other two persons were apparently able to be revived with a counteractive drug.

In the state where the arrests took place, the death toll due to heavy drug use has been estimated to have increased by three times over the past six years. Initially, the five men in this situation were all facing charges in the same county, but those charges were dropped because of the federal indictment. Currently, they each face a minimum of 20 years behind bars if convicted of the federal charges against them.

A U.S. attorney speaking about the situation said she hopes the men’s arrests send a strong message to the community that those who deal drugs will be hunted down and arrested. In Florida and all other states, however,  merely being accused of federal drug trafficking does not necessarily mean a conviction will be handed down in court. In the past, many defendants have been able to obtain positive outcomes by acting alongside experienced criminal defense guidance. An attorney who has successfully defended other high-profile cases would be able to help determine what options are available to build a strong defense.
