Many convicted of federal drug trafficking to be set free

Charges of drug-related crimes are often filed against people in Florida and other states across the nation. Being accused of federal drug trafficking is obviously a serious matter that can have a long-lasting negative impact on a person's private and professional life. Those convicted may face sentences that include years behind bars.

One man was arrested in October 2001 on suspicion of drug crimes in connection with a crack house investigation being conducted by federal agents at the time. Apparently, when the raid occurred, officers tossed grenades into the house, and some who were inside suffered burns from the exploding devices. The state charges against the man were reportedly dropped, but he was convicted in a federal court a year later.

His brother, who has also been imprisoned for 13 years of a 20-year sentence for the incident, is scheduled to be released in the near future. He is among six others in Florida whose sentences for federal drug trafficking convictions are being cut short. More than 50 others from other areas are also scheduled to be set free as part of a criminal justice reform action by president Barack Obama.

Whether a person convicted of federal drug trafficking in Florida serves an entire sentence as ordered by the court depends on the circumstances of an individual's situation. Certainly, anyone accused of such crimes will want to seek immediate legal representation in the matter in order to build as strong a defense as possible. Securing the assistance of a legal advocate who has experience in high-profile defense typically increases one's chances to obtain a positive outcome in court.
