Although every person accused of a crime in Florida is presumed innocent unless proved otherwise by a judge or jury, it is typically wise to secure competent legal guidance when preparing a defense against federal charges. Federal drug trafficking and other serious crimes can lead to long prison terms, substantial fines and other heavy penalties, if a conviction is rendered. In a recent alleged drug bust at sea, four people were arrested following a federal raid.
Authorities say that the value of the cocaine uncovered in the recent drug bust totaled more than $100 million in street value. The purported drug smugglers were apprehended approximately 95 nautical miles offshore. Agents say they seized 37 bales of cocaine, weighing at least 2,100 pounds.
The South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force has been acknowledged as the key force in the recent drug bust. The Florida Highway Patrol and several other agencies are said to have also combined efforts in the operation. The boat was located south of Santo Domingo when federal agents made their move.
Prosecution for federal drug trafficking in Florida is aggressive, and the possible punishment, if convicted, is severe. There are criminal attorneys who are experienced in handling high-profile situations that can offer sound legal counsel and help the accused explore all available options for defense. One has the right to request a meeting with an attorney as soon as an arrest has taken place to seek clarification of the applicable laws and determine the best course of action to take in light of impending charges.
