Hotel worker reports apparent white collar crime evidence

Any number of circumstances may lead to accusations of criminal wrongdoing in Florida. Nevertheless, anyone accused of a white collar crime or another offense is able to use all available resources to fight the charges in court. A first logical step to take in the process would be to request a meeting with an experienced criminal defense lawyer to discuss what options might be explored toward building a strong defense.

One man -- a Florida resident -- was recently convicted in federal court of identity theft, making counterfeit money and related charges. He had been staying in a hotel in another state when an employee of the hotel saw something suspicious in his room. She contacted authorities and told them there were sheets of uncut $100 bills lying in plain sight. Reportedly, the man was scheduled to check out of the hotel that very day.

When law enforcement agents arrived, they searched the premises and found evidence of a counterfeiting operation. Authorities also obtained evidence that connected the man staying in the hotel room to illegal activities in several other states. After pleading guilty in February, he was sentenced to serve six years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Restitution in excess of $6,000 was also ordered.

The penalties for a white collar crime conviction are typically severe. Often, as in this case, a conviction leads to an extended time in prison. This is one of many reasons it is advisable to act alongside a skilled and experienced defense lawyer when facing such charges in court. An attorney can often foresee what strategies the prosecution may use in court and prepare defense strategies to combat the tactics, which is often crucial toward a positive outcome.
